6th Grade A Day Foil Relief Project

We are getting right along here with our second project that focuses on line. The full relief project is made with a few rather plain materials in and of themselves.

Chipboard or Cardboard

Glue (white glue and glue stick)

Aluminum foil (heavy-duty)

Ink

Students had to draw images using only line. Once they came up with a composition they liked, they would transfer them to the chipboard, then go over the lines with glue. Once the glue dried they would cover a piece of aluminum foil with the glue stick and attach it to the face of their drawing. I showed them techniques to make the glue drawing show more under the aluminum foil. Students were encouraged to create their own textures also. When they were done, we went over everything with the ink. When the ink is dry, we would what a piece of felt so they could go over and remove some of the ink to create lighter areas of value.

Here is the example that I made in class for students to see:

JM Cougar Pride by Mrs. White.

Here's what we found out during this process. First and foremost the red ink did not work very well. The black ink worked the best and the brown ink worked to a degree. After a few tries and several mixes I made the decision to overall just use the black ink. Here are the results of a few of our early finishers!
